Little Ethiopia

I just went out to dinner in Little Ethiopia with my two brothers that live in LA (the other one is still in high school so lives back in Sacramento). It was an awesome experience. First, I would like to point out – where else in the world (other than Ethiopia) can you get Ethiopian food? That’s why LA is so great, because it is such a melting pot and you can try so many new things and meet people from different cultures and backgrounds.

And the food was amazing! We had no idea what we were doing or what to order, so the waitress said she would surprise us. So first she brought out Ethiopian wine which was very sweet, kind of like honey wine. And then the main dish came out which was a huge platter of chicken, steak, vegetables, and various sauces- some spicy and some like hummus-y. The coolest part was that you don’t use utensils. Instead, they give you these thin rice crepe like things, that you use to pick up the food. If you’re really good at it, the food is never supposed to touch your fingers, only the rice “towels.”  The food was amazing and within minutes my brothers and I had devoured the entire platter of food. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and I totally want to go back and try more Ethiopian dishes.

Food around the globe

As the semester is coming to a close, as finals are taking over my life, and as friends part ways for a month - I have been too busy to cook my own dinner. So recently we've been going out a lot to eat.  These are the times when I realize how fortunate we are to be in a city such as Los Angeles.  There is such a plethora (I hate using that word but it seems so fitting here) of food choices around the city.  Last week we went to Yang Chow, an AMAZING chinese food restaurant in China town.  It is always packed so if you go you MUST get reservations.  But the food is very authentic, a little bit spicy but not too spicy, and absolutely delicious.  Then a few days later we went to eat Cuban food at Versailles, for my friends' 22nd birthday.  Versailles is one of my favorite restaurants in LA.  Its reasonably priced, huuuuuuge portions, a low-key place, and the food is sooooo good. I had never tried Cuban food before I came to LA and now I'm obsessed. I love plantains and could eat them with every meal. The shredded pork with a mojito is my fave.  And then to bring my trip around the globe to a close, we had to make a stop at El Cholo for the best Mexican food around.  El Cholo is the USC hotspot, you're always bound to run into someone you know and whats great is that Sunday-Thursday, USC students get 1/2 off all the entrees! El Cholo has been around since my grandma lived in LA, and as I've heard from her the food is still just as good. I looove the food there, and the shrimp fajitas are me favorite :-)

And tomorrow we are going to get some classic American hotdogs at Pinks, the Los Angeles famous hot dog stand in Hollywood. Yummy! So before Christmas I need to make a stop at an Italian restaurant, Thai, Japanese, Greek... wow I have some eating to do ;-)

Pancakes the size of a small country

Yes that is correct.  I have often been known to exaggerate, but not when it comes to the size of these pancakes.  This morning I went to breakfast at The Griddle Cafe on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, and I kid you not, these pancakes are HUGE, and they give you three of them!  Not only are they huge, but they come in every flavor imaginable. The pancake I got (and shared with my boyfriend) was called "The Golden Ticket."  It had bananas, carmel, walnuts, streusel, and whipped cream. I think I might gain an allergy to sugar after that meal, but it was amazing. And I think between the two of us we ate about 1/4 of our plate.  It could have fed my entire table of 8 people.  I will now be eating pancake leftovers for weeks.  Some of the other flavors were: cheesecake, oreo, pumpkin, kahlua and baileys, apple, boysenberry, and the list goes on and on.  I feel like a restaurant critic right now, so maybe if engineering doesn't work out for me I will become a restaurant critic. So on that note I give it a two thumbs up, 5 stars, and all those good reviews! Yummy!!!
